Why you get a stamp crossing the border?
Stamp with the date of crossing a border put in your passort when entering Russia is required in the following situations:
- Temporary registration;
- Obtaining a Russian work permit;
- Appeal to the Executive authorities of the Russian Federation.
Consulate staff decides whether to issue you a multiple-entry visa by the stamps in your passport on a Russian visa. Also such stamps are effective tool to prevent violation of migration policy regarding the duration of your stay in Russia.
How to decipher information on the stamp?
Stamp in a passport confirming a fact of legal crossing the border, must look the following way:
- Icon meaning the way of crossing the border (on the photo it is a plane, aslo there are icons of a train and car).
- Country where passport were stamped and an authority which stamped it (in our case it is Russia and checkpoint).
- Number of stamping tool, which was used to stamp by an officer of border service.
- Date of crossing a border of Russia (on the photo it is 20 March 2016).
- Arrow of entry/exit. If the arrow is pointed to the right of the date (like on the photo) it means that you left the country. If arrow points to the date, it means that you entered the country.
- Shift number of an employee which put a stamp.
- Name of a border checkpoint where you crossed the border (in this case it is Sheremetyevo).

Till ~2014 they were blue, till mid 2019 — orange, now — pink. Earlier (<2010) a mix of violet, blue or cyan
